The Grand Canyon, an extraordinary place where even superlatives seem to fall short. When trekking in Grand Canyon one can lose track of time. The elements of rock, wind, sun and water become the daily reality and immense silence fills the night sky.

Unlike the majority of Grand Canyon hikers  on the Kaibab and Bright Angel Trails, you want to trek the vastness of Grand Canyon away from mules, privies and emergency phones. Climb a summit, explore a slot canyon, camp on the edge of the precipice, scramble down a route that will never see pack stock. Grand Canyon Extreme itineraries, provided by Sky Island Treks, are your ticket to the places no one else goes.

The itineraries of Grand Canyon Extreme have no comparison.
An extreme trek typically leaves the trail on the second day and stays remote for 4 or more days. You’ll experience true solitude. You’ll be challeged to test your limits. You’ll value the guide’s route finding skills quickly as you traverse areas that, at first, appear inaccessible.

Grand Canyon Extreme trek dates are set for optimum weather conditions.
This sometimes means that winter rains or snows are required in order to have sufficient drinking water or proper snowshoeing conditions. We delight in the winter snows of the North Rim. Although we keep the need for specialized gear to a minimum through careful route finding, we occasionally encounter short belayed climbs or rappels. We travel in harmony with the weather and terrain.

Extreme treks are classed by party size.
A solo trek has one client accompanied by one guide. This is the ultimate in solitude.  A small party consists of 2 guides and no more than 4 clients.  A large party consists of 3 guides and 5 to 8 clients. 6 months advance notice is advised but not required for large parties.

Trekking experience is a must as sherpas are not available due to the limited party size. It is expected that trekkers, with sufficient experience to be prepared for the rigors of Extreme itineraries, will own an expedition sized rucksack on which they have fine tuned the adjustment and are comfortable wearing for extended duration. All other gear, tents, sleeping gear and eating utensils are provided as well as menu and snack foods matched to your preferences. Vegetarians are welcome.

Because we value civilization, and we want you to "see it all" many Extreme itineraries spend the last night at Bright Angel Campground and enjoy dinner at historic Phantom Ranch.
